What does filing on your own
really cost?
From our experience with 1,250+ trademarks, these are the most common mistakes when filing without experience, and what each one costs.
Trademark registration · no prior experience
Customer: brand ownerStatus: stuck
Registered to the manager personally instead of the company, so you’ll have to transfer ownership after registration.
The mark doesn’t protect your actual business, so you’ll have to register it again under the right class.
Rejection by SAIP, or an opposition from the owner of a similar mark who got there first.
Rejection for not complying with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property’s rules.
An inaccurate description means amending and refiling the application more than once.
You may face complaints and legal disputes from the owners of registered marks.
Every day you delay registering your mark is a chance for someone else to register it first, and the effort you put into building your identity is lost.
+90 days of delay per application
And losses can reach hundreds of thousands once the mark is used and printed on products, or in legal disputes.

The real cost isn't the registration fees, it's the mistakes you can't see.

Questions we hear often
How much does it cost to register a trademark with you?
Our fee is paid in two parts: SAR 1,400 after your application is officially filed, and SAR 1,400 when you receive the certificate. The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) fees are paid directly to SAIP in three stages: SAR 1,000 at filing, SAR 500 for publication and SAR 5,000 for final registration.
Do I pay anything before the application is filed?
No. We study your mark and give you an honest estimate of its chances at no cost. The first payment is only due after your application is officially filed with SAIP.
What is the difference between your fee and the SAIP fees?
SAIP fees are fixed government fees that everyone registering a trademark pays, and they go straight to SAIP. Our fee covers the study, the filing and the follow-up until you receive the certificate, and it is paid in two parts.
What does the trademark registration service include?
A study of your mark before filing, backed by our study guarantee; choosing the right class; alternative suggestions if your mark is taken; a certified translation of your mark; writing every detail of the application; and filing and following it up until you receive the certificate. It also covers one new application, one appeal and one reply to an opposition per order, at no extra fee.
What do you need from me to get started?
Your logo and a short description of the products or services you offer. If the mark will be registered to an establishment or a company, we also need the commercial registration, plus an email address and a mobile number to receive the application notices.
Is the certified translation included in the price?
Yes. If your mark contains any non-Arabic letter or word, we provide a certified translation from an accredited translation office at no extra cost.
Do you guarantee my mark will be accepted?
No one can guarantee acceptance: the decision is SAIP’s and can vary from one examiner to another. What we offer is a careful study built on our experience with more than 1,250 marks, plus our study guarantee: if your mark is rejected for a reason we did not tell you about, we refund our fee and the filing fee (SAR 1,000).
What if I find the same service for less?
If you find a licensed provider offering the same service with the same features and guarantees for less, we will do it for you free of charge.
Do you need access to my SAIP account?
Not necessarily. We can file through your account, or through an official authorisation with no access to your account at all. Your choice.
Are you licensed?
Yes. Alama is a service of Qiyad Intellectual Property Office, licensed by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property under number ALN202501185 and registered under unified national number 7041450235.
How long does trademark registration take?
Usually 3 to 5 months. SAIP responds to the application within 7 to 90 days (about 14 days in most cases), the mark is then published for 60 days, and the certificate is issued once the final fee is paid.
What are the stages of trademark registration?
It starts with studying the mark and choosing its class, then filing the application and paying the filing fee, then SAIP’s formal and substantive examination. After initial acceptance the publication fee is paid and the mark is published for 60 days. If no one objects, the final registration fee is paid and the certificate is issued.
What is the difference between formal and substantive examination?
Formal examination checks the application details, such as the Arabic and Latin names, the description, the mark type and the translation. If something is wrong, the application is returned for correction and is not lost. Substantive examination checks the mark against registered marks and the law, and a rejection at this stage means losing the filing fee.
What is the publication period?
It is the 60 days after initial acceptance, when your mark is published in SAIP’s gazette so others can object. If it ends with no objection, your mark moves to final registration.
Does initial acceptance mean my mark is registered?
No. Initial acceptance is an important step, but the application can still be cancelled if the publication invoice is paid late or an objection goes unanswered. The mark is fully registered once the final fee is paid and the certificate is issued.
When will I receive my registration certificate?
When the publication period ends with no objection, the final invoice is issued (SAR 5,000 to SAIP). Once it is paid, the registration certificate is issued and we hand it to you.
Can I register a trademark without a commercial registration?
Yes. A trademark can be registered in an individual’s name; a commercial registration is not required.
Should I register the mark in my name or my establishment's?
It is best to register it to whoever will use it. If it is for your establishment, register it to the establishment, which also looks more professional. For companies, it must be registered to the company itself, since a company may have more than one owner.
Does the logo need the name in both Arabic and English?
No. It can contain the Arabic name only, the Latin name only, both, or just a shape with no words. But note that protection covers only what you register: if you register the English name alone, you cannot use the Arabic name on your shop or products.
Is a certified translation mandatory?
If your mark contains any non-Arabic letter or word, a certified translation is required for the application to be accepted, even for a single letter. You cannot translate it yourself; it must come from an accredited translation office. Fully Arabic marks need no translation.
What is a trademark class, and how do I choose one?
Marks are classified by the products or services they are used for, under the international Nice Classification (45 classes). We choose the right class for your business as part of the study, because a wrong class can mean registering again from scratch.
Can I register my mark in more than one class?
Yes, but each class needs its own application with its own SAIP fees. We show you the full cost for each class before we start.
Can I register a logo with no words?
Yes. This is called a figurative mark, made only of shapes or drawings. It is also a good option if your mark’s name is already taken.
What is the difference between a word mark and a figurative mark?
A word mark is text only, in a standard font. A figurative mark is shapes and drawings with no letters. A combined mark brings text and shapes together, or uses text in a distinctive font.
Which marks are hard to register?
Marks that are not distinctive, such as a product name (“Grills”), a phrase describing the product (“Tastiest Ice Cream”) or a generic word (“Restaurant”, “Café”), and sometimes place names. A mark similar to one already registered for similar products or services is also rejected.
How do I know whether my mark will be accepted?
Acceptance can’t be known for certain in advance, but its chances can be estimated by checking the mark against SAIP’s requirements and the GCC trademark law, and by searching for similar marks. That is exactly what our study before filing does, and we give you a clear estimate afterwards.
What are the logo image requirements?
A PNG or JPG image, square or rectangular (square is better), between 300 and 1,200 pixels, and under 5 MB. Don’t worry, we prepare it for you as part of the service.
What happens if my mark is rejected?
If it is rejected for a reason we did not tell you about in the study, you choose: we refund our fee and the filing fee (SAR 1,000), or we file a new application or an appeal and pay the SAIP fee (SAR 1,000) for you. For any other rejection, we file a new application or write the appeal at no extra fee (once each per order).
My mark was rejected for being similar to another mark. What now?
The best fix is to replace the similar word with a distinctive one, or register the logo on its own. If that isn’t possible, change the word so it sounds different, or add a distinctive core word. Adding generic words like “Restaurant” or descriptive ones like “Modern” is not enough.
My mark was rejected for lack of distinctiveness. What now?
Add a distinctive core word to your mark, ideally one unrelated to your business or an invented word. If you believe the rejection is wrong, you can file an appeal.
What is an appeal, and when do I file it?
An appeal challenges the decision to reject your mark. It is filed within 60 days of the rejection with a legal memo explaining why the mark deserves registration. The appeals committee reviews it in about 60 days, and the government fee is SAR 1,000. We write the appeal for you at no extra fee (one appeal per order).
What if someone objects to my mark during publication?
The Alama team writes the reply to the objection and follows it up on your behalf, at no extra fee (one opposition reply per order).
Do I lose the SAIP fees if my mark is rejected?
If, God forbid, the application is rejected at substantive examination, SAIP does not refund any fees already paid. But if the rejection is for a reason we did not tell you about in our initial study, Alama will compensate you.
How long does trademark protection last?
Ten years from the protection date, renewable for equal periods. Renewal is filed during the final year, or within the six months after it ends; otherwise the mark is struck off.
Can I use my mark before the certificate is issued?
It is best to wait for the final certificate. If needed, after initial acceptance you can get a filing certificate (SAR 500) proving your mark is being registered. First check that the body that needs it, such as the municipality or customs, accepts this certificate.
Can I use my mark in different colours or a different layout?
Under SAIP rules the mark must be used exactly as registered. Minor changes in colour or layout are at the owner’s own risk, and are not advised on a shop sign, since signs are checked by the municipality.
Can I change my mark after it is registered?
Yes, through an amendment request for minor changes. Substantial changes, such as adding a word, a letter or a new shape, need a new registration.
Can a trademark be sold or transferred?
Yes. Ownership can be transferred in whole or in part, with or without payment, and it can also pass by inheritance, will or gift.
Can I license my mark to someone else?
Yes. You can license another person or business to use your mark, as in a franchise, as long as the licence does not run longer than the mark’s protection.
What happens if I don't use my registered mark?
At the request of an interested party, the competent court may strike off a mark that has not been seriously used for five consecutive years, unless its owner gives a justification for not using it.
What is a trademark?
It is what sets your products or services apart from competitors. It can be a name, a logo, a symbol, a slogan or a design, or a mix of these.
What is the difference between a trademark and a trade name?
A trade name is your establishment’s official name in the commercial register with the Ministry of Commerce. A trademark identifies your products or services, needs its own registration with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property for exclusive protection, and can be sold or licensed as a separate asset.
What are the benefits of registering my trademark?
An exclusive right that stops others from using or copying it, an asset that raises the value of your business, more trust from your customers, and the option to franchise and expand locally and internationally.
What are the risks of not registering my mark?
Someone else may register it first, forcing you to change your whole identity and lose everything you have built. Competitors may copy it and mislead your customers, and proving ownership in any dispute becomes hard.
